Rigid Insulation

Rigid Insulation

Concrete is not a good insulator. I would like to use foam insulation for the ceiling spaces (especially under the roof). Most of the contractors I speak to use fiberglass batting. It’s cheaper than foam insulation but not as effective. Does anyone in the Keys install foam insulation at an affordable price? Foam insulation has an R value of 1″ = R-6.8, NCFI – rigid insulation spray, 3-1/2” = R21.

Between the outside walls and the wall of a room what do we use? Insulation type? Wall supports? I hope to use steel studs. The studs will create a space for insulation, wiring and hold up the sheetrock.

For the exterior walls should we use foil vapor insulation, rigid foam, fiberglass, mineral wool or foam? For foam do you lose on fire insurance reduction?

Foam Insulation

Foam Insulation

Rigid foam insulation and foil-faced foam sheathing board consists of a uniform closed-cell foam core bonded on each side to a foil face. One side has a reflective foil facer and the other side has a white non-reflective foil facer. It provides one of the highest R-values per inch of any rigid insulation (R-6.0 at 1 inch).

As for mineral wool insulation. What’s not to love? It’s water resistant, mold-proof, fire-proof, high in recycled content, and has a good R-value that actually improves as it gets colder outside.
